This poem is about a man's journey to meet the love of his life.

Based on the poem he crosses the sea and three fields to reach her house. In the first stanza, the speaker is in a boat at sea noticing the way the little waves of the sea move.

'in fiery ringlets from their sleep.' In this part of the poem, he describes the shine of his light on the sea as fiery ringlets which is an example of imagery because we have that image in our minds.

'As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed i' the slushy sand' this part of the poem shows that he was on a boat and that he got closer to the beach. He also uses imagery by describing the slushy sands because we all know the sense of wet and watery sand on our feet.

In the second stanza, he explains his journey from warm sea-scented beach to three fields and finally the farm, and by 'quick sharp scratch,' and 'blue spurt of a lighted match' he means the action of lighting up a match by his lover.

In the last two lines, he thinks the sound of their hearts beating is so loud that her voice gets lost.
